JonArnett, a homegrown legend who starred as a running back with USC and the Rams, has died, the university announced Monday. He was 85.

One of the most elusive runners of his time, Arnett earned the nickname “Jaguar Jon” during his days dominating the Trojans’ backfield. He took over as a sophomore in 1954 and led USC in rushing (601 yards), scoring (55 points) and punt returns (129 yards), as well as interceptions (three) while moonlighting on the defensive end.

Arnett was named an All-American in 1955.

Tennessee football coach Jeremy Pruitt and nine others were fired for cause when an internal investigation found what the university chancellor Donde Plowman called “serious violations of NCAA rules.”

Tennessee has been conducting an investigation since a tip Nov. 13 into allegations of recruiting violations.

Because the firing is for cause, Tennessee will not be paying Pruitt a $12.6-million buyout after he went 16-19 in three seasons.

Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is forgoing his senior season to enter the NFL draft, while Buckeyes wide receiver Chris Olave is returning for his senior year. ... New Orleans Saints defensive line coach RyanNielsen has agreed in principle to become Louisiana State’s next defensive coordinator, a person familiar with the situation said.

Musgrove goes home to Padres

The San Diego Padres are adding yet another pitcher to their rotation, agreeing to bring right-hander Joe Musgrove to his hometown team in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to a person familiar with the deal. Another person confirmed the New York Mets were also involved in the trade, acquiring left-hander Joey Lucchesi from San Diego.

Mets general manager Jared Porter, who was hired last month, sent graphic, uninvited text messages and images to a female reporter in 2016 when he was working for the Chicago Cubs, ESPN reported Monday night. Porter sent dozens of texts to the woman, concluding with a picture of “an erect, naked penis,” according to the report. ... Reliever Archie Bradley and the Philadelphia Phillies finalized their $6-million, one-year contract. The Phillies also acquired infielder C.J. Chatham from the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named or cash. ... After losing the Spanish Super Cup final, Barcelona is also in danger of losing Lionel Messi for an extended period after he hit an opponent toward the end of the match. Messi could be suspended for up to 12 games for the red card he received in the final minutes of his team’s 3-2 loss to Athletic Bilbao in Seville on Sunday.

The hockey world championships were pulled from Belarus following pressure from opposition groups and a threatened boycott by sponsors.

The International Ice Hockey Federation cited safety concerns and said it will seek a new country to co-host the tournament with Latvia or host it on its own. The tournament is scheduled to start May 21.
